On a recent trip to LA, we were driving through the hills with the sun setting at dusk, when I saw this vision that was so LA, I had to capture it. There is something about the Palm trees lining the streets in LA that is just so distinctive.

I was there over the week of the Emmy's and there was such amazing hype. Everyone was out and about and there was a lot of celebrity spotting. Whilst I was there, I was able to meet up with dear friend of mine Carl, who I have known nearly my whole working life - always such a treat to see him.

I can't wait to tell you why I was there. There are some really exciting things in the pipe line that I have been working on but you will have to wait a little longer.
Stay tuned......
SPRING SUMMER WINDOW INSTALLATION.

Here on the blog we like to treat you to some behind the scenes images and sneak peaks of up and coming events before they happen. Above are some dreamy shots for you all this Friday afternoon, of our new seasons windows. Due to run out across all stores this coming week. Missy our ever talented window stylist has created another amazing window with our covetable 'invisible girl' on a swing adorned with climbing roses.

These pictures were taken in our head office showroom where we test all installations a few months prior for approval. The set up can take up to nearly a day the first time and it is quite a construction sight as you can see. It is a good time to make any finals tweaks or changes to the creations. What an ethereal way to lead us into this truly balmy spring summer weekend.

Hope you all enjoy visiting our stores and seeing the new installation.

This is the season to hail the return of the suit, that great fashion two piece that works perfectly on it’s own but does double duty as separates. As with any comeback, there is always a slight twist and this season bright bold colours and head to toe prints are the new kids on the block. Brighter and flashier than their more classic mates, they need careful consideration to get right.

So let’s begin with the printed suit. Head to toe print is a bold investment and so good right now. The trick is what to wear with it. When wearing the suit head to toe, team it back with non-descript classics like a great white tee, a tan shoe, a black belt. Keep it simple. It’s the only way to go. The only exception to this is jewellery (of course there is always a rule breaker). Jewellery should be bold and colourful but mixed in with the tones of the print. Now, once you separate the two pieces you can go wild with colour. A print pant with a bright yellow shell top, for example, or a printed blazer over a coloured shirt and tan pants. Mix and match and have fun with it.

When you come to a bright coloured suit, the rules reverse. Confused? Read on. You can wear any colour bright suit, but be careful with how you mix it. Keep like colours together and mix with a highlight of nude or tan.For example, a bright red suit works with an orange or pink top and a nude shoe is fabulously chic, (or a bright orange shoe even better) but wear it with white tee and a black heel and it just does not have the same effect. It just does not have the same punch.

The classics are still around, but they have been given an overhaul too with new accents: the tuxedo suit has a slightly more seventies vibe, or team a man style jacket with a wider pant. My advice is to stick to black and white with this. It’s classic for a reason and best not to stray too far from what has always worked. A bold red lip is the only colour needed. And keep it to a heel as it’s so much sexier.

So whatever your style this summer, suit up. It’s the right time

Fantastical Creatures!!

I have always loved sculpture, and anyone who knows me, also knows about my obsession with horses, and animals in general. So when a friend presented me with an amazing bronze horse sculpture as a gift for my birthday last year, I was more than in love. It’s not the only horse sculpture I have around me, I have marble ones, others made from zinc and not to mention the countless paintings. This one in particular is robust, oversized and round – pint size in comparison to the amazing Botero’s above, but gorgeous all the same!

On a recent trip to Melbourne to visit our GPO store, I passed an amazing granite purse in Bourke Street Mall. It is huge!!! You can see the scale of it next to the people around it. I love that it is permanent and really makes the street more than just a street. A little bit of what Europe does so well right here in Australia…..street art!! In Paris there is the gorgeous silver ball fountain in the forecourt of the Palais Royale. A real hideaway right in the heart of Paris….a must for any visitor to Paris. The first time I saw a Botero was in Paris, lining the Champs Elysee. There must have been 40 of them – one every 20 metres or so. Then I saw more in New York in the financial area in Midtown, and in Spain there is the huge puppy sculpture by Geoff Koons.

Another serious favourite is the inspired French duo, LaLannes. They created their own brand of surrealism in the 60’s, sculpting fantastical creatures like huge rhinos that opened to become desks, cabbages with chickens feet and a cat with the body of a fish. Beautiful pieces that let the mind run wild – bunny heads on fish like torsos and fly toilet seats. Their life’s work generated a ‘zoo’s worth of animals’. A friend was lucky enough to see the retrospective exhibition in Des Art Decoratifs in Paris last year. They even worked at one stage with the late Yves Saint Laurent, creating a hand crafted gold bodice which he later showed as part of his 1969 collection. Tom Ford has one of their croc consoles in the foyer of his Madison Avenue store. Do yourself a favour and get a copy of one of their books.

It got me thinking about the up-coming Spring Summer season we are about to start designing. Inspiration can really come from anywhere……even in the most oversized unexpected places….

Guest Blogger: Glynis Traill-Nash, Freelance Fashion Writer and commentator.

Firstly, I would like to state that it has been some years since I attended a school formal. It would appear much has changed in the intervening years, while other things have stayed much the same. Plus ça change and all that. So, undoubtedly many girls still spend the best part of their chemistry lessons in the preceding months debating what to wear. I’m guessing, however, that rather than sketching their ideas on the back of textbooks, they are probably comparing tear sheets from Vogue and Harper’s—or flicking through catwalk exits on style.com on their iPad 2. The biggest difference is that, back in the day, most girls would employ the services of a dressmaker to whip up the dress of their dreams. You’d have to choose patterns, fabrics and then argue with your mother as to why you couldn’t wear black. The biggest decision was often the toss-up between plain or waterwave taffeta. (OK, it was the Eighties, I’ll admit.)

Today’s formal-goers have things so much easier. Head to your favourite store, choose the dress of your dreams, find shoes, book blowdry. Done! But here’s my word of advice. You will be looking back at these photos for the rest of your life. And not only that, all your friends will be putting them on Facebook where they will remain, on the internet, for years. Thankfully, that was something we never had to contend with. (And I’m guessing the corsage has gone the way of the printed photograph?)

My advice for this year’s formal-goers would be this. Don’t think about what’s hot this season—think what’s going to look timeless and beautiful for years to come. Think elegance. And the easiest way to achieve that—and make you look your most statuesque—is with a full-length dress. Minidresses—begone!

Lisa Ho’s spring/summer collection has a variety of elegant options in a range of colours, from wineberry to candy pink, aqua to tangerine. You might like a body-skimming gown in liquid satin, or a one-shouldered Grecian style, while strapless is always sophisticated. You don’t want anything too fitted, either, because a little volume or movement will come in handy once you’re on the dancefloor. Just add some dazzling jewellery and a great blowdry, or even an updo. Trust me, opting for elegance means you will never have to cringe at your formal photos, no matter how many years have passed—or how many Facebook friends you have.

Finally our shoes have arrived!!!

My other name is really Immelda. Shoes and Jewellery are my weakness. I've been known to come home from a buying trip overseas with up to 20 pairs. Extreme, I know but when you see a great shoe you can't not snap it up. I even travel with a whole separate bag designated for shoes alone.

They have to be just right, the heel, toe, colour, leather! It all has to come together to make it into my bag for the journey home. I've been known to buy shoes not even in my size just because I had to have them. For instance, a pair of Josephine Baker Emma Hope shoes which had glass bananas around the skirt and even a pair of Gucci Python heels in 2 sizes too big. In the complete contrast though, I have come back form a trip with not one pair and then bought up big at Cosmo in Double Bay!

Unfortunately by some cruel twist of fate, this strange gene has been passed onto my daughter. Who at 3 years old packed my bag for the hospital when I went into premi-labour and screamed across the room "what heels do you want me to pack for you? I'm going to wear the Sergio Rossi's" I replied, "listen baby, where I'm going I won't need them."

Brain Freeze - I realised once, after a feverish shop for a black gladiator flat that I just HAD to have, that I in fact had 4 pairs unworn in my closet that where near identical. But....there where slight, very slight differences, and that my friends is reason enough for another pair - am I right?
My Daughter Maddie and I have been busy in the kitchen over the weekend making Macadamia Basil Pesto for her school Fair. She has decorated the jars with my good velvet ribbons and limited edition digital prints!!!! The SCEGGS fair is on this coming Sunday 21st August from 10-3pm. 215 Forbes St Darlinghurst.

It's a great fair and we always come home with a few new gold fish. There's also a great clothes swap organised by some of the mothers. Lot's of community fun!!!

I have also decided to get involved in the silent auction happening on the day. So I'm donating a $1500 gift voucher - that should help with a school formal dress, wedding or special event!

Hope to see you there !!!

On the Road

Over the next week I'm on the road, in store. There is a 'Meet the designers' night at the Strand Arcade from 6-8pm on the 16th August. It's a time that I can catch up with my amazingly loyal VIP shoppers and also other long time designer friends of mine in the Strand Arcade like Alex Perry. If you are in the area pop in and say hi!!!

I'm then off to my new store in Chadstone, Victoria. Can't wait to see the store - our architects Nico and Alix have done and amazing job so we are having a glass of Champagne on Thursday 25th between 6-8pm to celebrate!!
Back to basics by Fiona Kowalski, Fashion Director, Madison Magazine.

It's this time of year when you’ve moved on
from winter, but are still not quite ready to get those summer brights out. In
fact, every year at this time, I start obsessing about getting the perfect
basics in my wardrobe and gearing my wardrobe to wear only this! In fact, my
colleague has just reminded me that this time last year I swore to wear only
black and white with a touch of red – and that’s it. My declaration involved
red lipstick and a jewelled red necklace I had recently purchased, and it kind
of snowballed from there.

So this year, I am once again on a colour restricted palette: black, white,
camel and navy. That’s it. And now, all of a sudden, I need a perfectly cut
black pant, a new white shirt, an unworn cotton tee (in my ideal world, I have a
‘never worn’ fresh cotton tee every time I reach for one, but that’s another story), a slim leg pant and a mid length skirt. And I need a very sharp tailored jacket.

There is a return to the classic le smoking, Helmut Newton-style tuxedo jacket.
All the French girls are doing it: Emmanuel Alt has long favoured the man-style
jacket, and Lou Lou Dillon has always rocked a black tuxedo. I am torn if my
new basic is black or white. A perfect jacket is, in reality, black, but there
is nothing fresher than a white jacket over a white shirt and black pant. And I
love black and navy together as a fresh take on all black. I want to pare down
the accessories, keep things minimal and make my dressing life completely
streamlined. A pared down accessory can still be something bold, just not
fussy. I love the idea of a big necklace over a white shirt.

Everything else is minimal and to make this work you. Just. Cannot. Deviate.
From. The. Palette. It makes things a bit more exciting when you have a few
boundaries for dressing; it definitely makes morning mayhem selection easier.
How liberating when you take out colour choices and are left with a core group
to choose from! It basically cuts out about 80% of my wardrobe, but try it.

I know this will pass when the sun comes out and prints hit the store but great
basics are something you will never regret buying. Never.
Some mesmerising pictures of our stunning new Chadstone store just before it was open to the public. From our ever talented and gorgeous architect duo; Nico and Alix, another beautifully finished and as ever, expertly styled and designed store. They continue to wow us with their inspired work and the latest edition to their ever growing portfolio does not disappoint. The new store is open to trade now, but for those who haven't had a chance to see it in person, we thought you might like a sneak peek behind the scenes. If you haven't yet had the time, it is well worth a visit. Whilst you are there, you can check out the new colourful and inspired Spring collection. Enjoy!

Spring Summer Launch 2011

Backstage snaps from last Wednesday night at the David Jones Fashion Launch for Spring Summer 11. The Fashion Pack were out and the champagne was flowing. The glamorous Miranda Kerr was back strutting her stuff for the first time here in Oz after having her bub, and was definitely a highlight of the night. As the night kicked on after the show, we slipped away for some good old fashion Chinese across the way - what better way to finish the night off.
We showed at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week with a luxurious
collection inspired by Lisa's love of holidays on Capri. The collection
is saturated in the colours of the Italian island: the pink of
bougainvillea to the lilac of cascading wisteria, the aqua of the Blue
Grotto to the wineberry of its building's facades. Alongside the bright
colours, our signature prints also feature – from otherworldly prints to
a nod to batik, to blurred LED lights and a wavy wishbone graphic.
Walked by the likes of Julia Nobis, Rachel Rutt and Samantha Harris at The Art
Gallery of NSW, Lisa Ho S/S 11-12 was a collection of modern yet timeless
classics.
